The Hotel Rural Barroca d'Alva is set in the estate of the same name, a working agricultural and stock-rearing estate. The original buildings that housed the Estate's numerous workers have been skilfully adapted to recreate a genuine rural atmosphere.
The Estate's 1600 hectares produces cork, rice, maize and forage for animals. The Estate also breeds racehorses and Lusitanians for José Samuel Lupi's Rio Frio Stud, wild bulls for bullfights for the same owner and the Escudero and Rio Frio herds.
The herds can be visited by guests accompanied by a guide, to observe the animals running free and watch them being fed and cared for.

The Hotel Rural Barroca d'Alva is ideally suited to host for equestrian events organised by the Equestrian Centre such as the Eventing Trials. The Centre has organised the last 4 National Championship, and, every March, organises the International Trials which have brought international acclaim.
Every year also (in January) the Centre hosts the, by now, traditional Raid Hípico dos Reis endurance event, with the National Championships also being held here in 2005.
